Samsung Melbourne Marathon Festival 2006

Monash Sport will once again support a team from Monash University in the upcoming Samsung Melbourne Marathon Festival which will be held on Sunday October 8, 2006.

The Samsung Melbourne Marathon Festival is an exciting event for participants of all ages and fitness levels. With running and walking opportunities ranging from 5km up to 42km, Monash University will again be supporting a huge team.

The first 200 people to register for the Event with the Monash University Team will receive a FREE running top, either singlet or t-shirt. There are also many other great benefits in joining the Marathon Festival with the Monash University Team, such as being part of one of the biggest corporate teams in the event, joining other Monash team members at the start line (a healthy breakfast will be provided for all those involved in the 7.5km marafun event), bag transport to the finish line and having access to the Hospitality Marquee on Race Day.

Event Information

The Melbourne Marathon (42.2K), Half Marathon (21.1K), Half Marathon Walk, Marathon Team Relay or Marafun (7.5K) can offer a personal challenge, a team building opportunity and a means to support some wonderful charities.


Melbourne Marafun (7.5km)

The Melbourne MaraFun Run / Walk is a 7.5km family event. It is an opportunity for everyone to join in the excitement and fun of the Melbourne Marathon day and gives all ages and fitness levels the chance to be inspired!

It starts at Point Ormond Reserve, Elwood. Melways Ref A2 at 8.00am.

The Melbourne MaraFun welcomes runners, walkers and children under 16 years of age.

Prams / strollers are permitted.

All participants receive a medal and certificate.

You can get to the MaraFun start on the special buses by purchasing a ticket when you register.

All start areas will have staff and volunteers to assist participants with information, water, toilets and medical support. A clothing bus is provided to take participant’s clothing to the finish line for collection on presentation of a race number.


Half Marathon Run/Walk (21.1km)

The Melbourne Half Marathon (21.1km) starts north of The Tea House, Ricketts Point at 8.00am.  Melways Ref 86 B8.

Each participant receives a medal and certificate.

The course will be closed from 7.00am in both directions between Balcombe Road and Haydens Road. There is very limited parking and access to the start area.

The best way to get to the start is on the Half Marathon buses by purchasing a ticket when you register.

Competitors have the chance to win a trip for 2 to the 2007 Rotorua Marathon kindly donated by Asics, Official Shoe of the Melbourne Marathon. The prize includes flights, accommodation and 1 entry into the Rotorua Marathon.

All start areas will have staff and volunteers to assist participants with information, water, toilets and medical support. A clothing bus is provided to take participant’s clothing to the finish line for collection on presentation of a race number.


Marathon (42.2km)

The Samsung Melbourne Marathon starts at Mile Bridge on the Nepean Highway Frankston at 8.00am, opposite the Trainstation Health and Fitness Centre. Melways Ref: Map 99 D10. This is an AIMS certified course, and is best described as scenic, generally flat with some undulations at the halfway point.

The Nepean Highway will be closed in both directions from 7.00am from Seaford Road to Fletcher Street. Access this area via Wells Road.

The finish for the Melbourne Marathon is at the Arts Centre Spire.

You can get to the start on the marathon buses by purchasing a ticket when you register.

Competitors have the chance to win a trip for 2 to the 2007 New York Marathon kindly donated by Asics, Official Running Shoe of the Melbourne Marathon. The prize includes flights, accommodation and 1 entry into one of the world's most renowned Marathons.

All start areas will have staff and volunteers to assist participants with information, water, toilets and medical support. A clothing bus is provided to take participant’s clothing to the finish line for collection on presentation of a race number.


Marathon Team Relay

This is a great opportunity for corporate, school and social groups to jointly complete the course and to raise funds for charity.

Each team is to consist of a maximum of 6 runners and a minimum of 3.

Leg 1 starts at the official start line, and changes over at the relay stations at 7.5km, 15km, 21.1km, 30km, and 35km. All relay teams must supply their own support crew.

  1. Log on to the Samsung Melbourne Marathon website and follow the links to  Entry Details. Remember to select Monash University as your team.
  2. Once you have completed your registration on the Samsung Melbourne Marathon website email the following details to Caroline.Cooksley@campuslife.monash.edu.au

Training Support

Chris Wardlaw is a former student and tutor at Monash, an Australian Olympian and the Head Coach of the Australian Track and Field team at the Sydney Olympics (Including Cathy Freeman). He is regarded as one of the leading long distance running coaches going around.

Chris is happy to assist the Monash Community and has passed on the following message:

As a former Monash student and staff member I am delighted to have this opportunity to support the members of the Monash community in their endeavours. Volunteering – Can You Lend a Hand?

Monash Sport is also providing the opportunity to enjoy the fun and the experience of the Community Fitness Events without even raising a sweat. We require volunteers for the Marathon Festival (and also the ‘Around the Bay in a Day’ Ride and the Portsea Swim Classic) in a huge variety of duties, and we would love for you to be part of the Team.

All volunteers receive the official Monash Sport Team t-shirt, and access to the Hospitality Marquee on Race Day.
