The University of Melbourne and Monash go head to head in day one of the Southern University Games

Traditional rivals, the University of Melbourne (MELB) and Monash University have started the 2005 Southern University Games (SUG) where they left off last year finishing day one neck to neck in the competition.

With the fog lifting to reveal a sunny winters day, all 13 sports took to the playing fields at Latrobe Valley with MELB and Monash not giving an inch in their respective games. As one team recorded a victory the next wasn’t far behind in the next game.

Kicking off at 9am, MELB defeated Latrobe University 11 – 0 in Table Tennis with Monash following with a 10 – 1 victory over Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) shortly after.

The rivalry continued throughout the day in badminton, basketball, netball and ultimate Frisbee. The two teams came head to head in women’s touch where MELB took a confidence boosting 3 – 2 victory.

Monash leveled the playing field in the men’s volleyball competition taking a 3 set to 2 win over MELB.

SUG Project Manager, Nicole Schmidt, said the level of competition displayed in day one has set the scene for an exciting event that will go down to the wire.

"All teams have shown a determination to succeed at these Games and the rivalry between Monash and the University of Melbourne epitomizes the level of competition evident here." said Ms Schmidt.

Monash will get the chance to take a one up gold medal victory tomorrow when the AFL grand final is scheduled to commence at 1pm at Stoddard Oval, Traralgon.
