Using Your Commute To Lose a few tonnes

Using active transport methods can benefit your health and the environment.

A group of students and staff are set to take part in a new study to promote active transport at Monash University launched during the University’s recent Sustainable Transport Month.

The study, which will run until the end of the year, has been initiated by the University’s Office of Environmental Sustainability in partnership with Monash Sport and Health Wellbeing and Development. The study aims to promote active transport to and from the participants’ place of work or study as part of an overall health and fitness improvement program.

One of the participants, Cassandra Murray who works at Monash University Clayton campus, said when applying for the study ‘I would like to increase my physical fitness and reduce my carbon footprint. I find it best to have a goal and work towards it with a team, it’s more motivating.’

Participants will benefit from:

  • A comprehensive health and fitness assessment

  • A individual fitness programme incorporating active transport to and from Monash University

  • Membership of Monash Sport facilities

  • Loan of a bicycle where necessary

The participants, selected from Monash University Clayton, Caulfield and Peninsula campuses, will be encouraged to replace car journeys with more active transport for all or some of their commute to Monash.

The testing will include:

  • Fitness benchmarking

  • Environmental footprint

  • Wellbeing indicators

Their personal experiences and results will be shared via this dedicated web page where the wider community will be able to view the progress of each participant, their personal online diary and the ability to send messages of support.
