Supporting our elite athletes

A program to support elite athletes who are studying at Monash was launched at Clayton last week, with vice-chancellor Professor Richard Larkins lending his full support.

Ms Briony Schofield (Monyx), Mr John White, Law Faculty mentor Ms Michelle Clark and Professor Richard Larkins.

The program identifies elite student athletes and encourages them to train and participate in sport at Monash while supporting them in their studies.

Representatives from each faculty who will act as mentors and supporters also attended the function in the sports centre.

Professor Larkins encouraged the faculty representatives to be proactive in their roles by contacting the students and encouraging open lines of communication.

"Students who try and balance their elite sporting commitments with study are important role models, and it is important that we do our best to support and encourage them," Professor Larkins said.

"Last year we had six Monash students taking part in the Athens Olympic Games, with one winning a gold medal.

"It is important that we provide a flexible and supportive environment to give these athletes the balance they need to manage and succeed with their studies."

Advisor to the vice-chancellor, sport, Mr John White said a brochure advertising the athlete support program was being distributed to more than 600 schools throughout the state.
