Monash University has today initiated a ground breaking development in the sport of Cricket with the launch of the Monash University Cricket School.

Operating under the tutelage and direction of Monash University’s Director of Cricket, and former Australian Test Captain Graham Yallop, the school will develop young cricketing talent across a broad range of disciplines necessary for their success. The school will support Cricket Victoria pathway programs through the introduction of innovative education, training and development opportunities for young cricketers aged 12 between 18 years old.

The Monash University Cricket School will be based at of the new Monash University High Performance Sports Training Centre and use the world class teaching and sporting facilities at the University’s Clayton campus.

The program will run over a twelve month period starting each April and is designed to ensure cricketers can represent their regular clubs and pathway programs while receiving unique development opportunities provided by Monash University.

Mr Yallop said enrolments into the inaugural Monash University Cricket School season were now underway.

“The Monash University Cricket School is a unique opportunity for young cricketers to develop not just their technical skills but the other elements required to succeed in both sport and life,” Mr Yallop said.

The core tier will focus on practical cricket skills education and the theory to prepare players for the mental side of the game. The development tier introduces additional practical cricket sessions and matchesto the theoretical stream, ensuring players understand the application of the theory. The third tier is the representative level for more advanced players with squad members having the opportunity to implement their learning’s into match play situations and represent the Monash University Cricket School in a number of matches.

Announcing the launch of Monash University Cricket School, Director of Sport Martin Doulton said the unique initiative reflected more than just Monash University’s significant support to sport, but also demonstrated its underlying commitment to improving the human condition.

“By providing tuition and support in a range of theoretical classes and practical sessions all taken by qualified instructors and sporting experts, students of the Monash University Cricket School will learn so much more than what it takes to be a successful cricketer,” Mr Doulton said.

“Monash University also hopes that many of the graduates of the Monash University Cricket School will be better prepared to combine study at Monash University and playing at the Premier level.
