Four gold and plenty of medals for Monash at the Southern University Games and Championships

The men's Australian Rules football team won the first Gold medal at the Southern University Games (SUG) in Gippsland 4th-7th July. Monash's team manager Alex McKenzie was very proud of his expansive team. "The boys did a great job all competition. We've been building the team up for a few years so it's great to finally bring home the Gold. The team was evenly made up of players from all our campuses including Gippsland, so it's an awesome achievement across Monash Uni," said Alex.

Other Monash University gold medallists were men's rugby, women's soccer and men's table tennis. Rugby sport manager, Glen Croy was very excited about the win, the first time Monash Uni have taken out the title at the SUG.

Monash University placed 2nd overall at the SUG, a very close 12 points behind the overall winner. There were great contributions across the sports contested, including five silver medals and five bronze medals.

Tennis and hockey Southern Uni Championships were held in Melbourne 6th-8th July, resulting in silver for women's hockey and bronze for the men and a silver for women's tennis.

17 out of 21 Monash University teams from these events have now qualified for the Australian University Games to be held in Brisbane 25 to 30 September this year.  The Games are expected to entice 6000 competitors from 46 member universities to converge on Queensland.
