Monash students and alumni managed to bring home three gold, two silver and three bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games.

In the final week of the games, arts student Jacinta Hamilton – as part of the Australian women’s basketball team - defeated New Zealand by 38 points to win the gold medal match.

Lauren Hewitt, who completed a Bachelor of Science in 2005, won a gold medal for her team’s performance in the 4 x 100 m relay – after surviving a hairy baton change to the last runner.

As part of the men’s hockey team, Travis Brooks, a computing graduate, also won gold, and Janine Ilitch received silver after the women’s netball team were narrowly defeated by New Zealand.

Earlier in the games, Brenton Rickard – a Science student – won one gold, one silver and two bronze medals for his efforts in the pool.

Mr Rickard swam the breaststroke leg in the gold-medal-winning Men's 4x100m medley relay. He also won silver in the Men's 200m breaststroke and bronze in the 50m and 100m breaststroke.
