Monash Southern University Games Champions

300 Monash University student athletes fought hard and won the Southern University Games (SUG) held in Ballarat 3-6 th July. They were victorious winning gold in eight sports: men's and women's Australian football, lawn bowls, mixed netball, rugby 7's, ten pin bowling, men's tennis and women's touch football. The Monash results also included seven silver medals and four bronze, adding important points to the overall tally and triumph.

With this overall team success, the title was taken from the University of Melbourne, key rivals in the Southern Region of University Sport.

Monash students competed amongst over 1900 athletes from Universities from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

Sport Manager and Gippsland student athlete, Aimee Buchan said that the women’s footy team is ecstatic about the victory and is determined to go further. "You bloody ripper" said Buchan.

Aside from the teamwork aspects for every athlete, students relished leadership roles in sport managing their teams and some filled coaching roles. Monash Sport staff, trainers and a physio supported the teams from organisation and preparation through to injury management.

The SUG acts as a qualifier for the Australian University Games (AUG) which will take place in Adelaide 24-29 th September. Additional athletes will join the team from individual sports and the SUG success will inspire great performances at the AUG.
