Monash win first gold of the games

Today Monash University secured the first gold medal at the 2005 Southern University Games with a convincing win over the University of Ballarat in the Australian Football competition.

Being out of medal contention for the past three years in the Australian Football competition, Monash gave it all they had from the very beginning, starting off with a goal in the first fifty seconds.

Going into half time with a 29 point lead, Monash maintained their lead throughout the game with a final score of 7.7 (49) to the University of Ballarat’s 4.2 (26).

Monash's team manager Alex McKenzie was very proud of his expansive team.

"The boys did a great job all competition. We've been building the team up for a few years so it's great to finally bring home the Gold. The team was evenly made up of players from all our campuses including Gippsland, so it's an awesome achievement across Monash Uni," said Alex.

With gold medal games being fervently contested in all disciplines tomorrow, participants will be out eager to secure an all important qualifying position for the 2005 Australian University Games (AUG).

To be held in Brisbane from the 25 - 30 September, the 2005 AUG will showcase a record 26 sports, four more than those offered in previous years including athletics, australian football, badminton, baseball, basketball, beach volleyball, cross country, cycling, diving, hockey, judo, kendo, netball, rockclimbing, rowing, rugby union 7's, soccer, softball, squash, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, touch, ultimate frisbee, volleyball and water polo.
