Monash to compete across the pondThursday 2 AprilMonash University will be represented at the upcoming New Zealand University Games (NZUG). Held from 14 – 17 April 2009, NZUG will attract over 2200 participants in 29 sports and is one of the largest annual multi-sport events in New Zealand. NZUG are the Flagship University Sporting event in New Zealand. The first Uni Games was held in 1902 with 3 sports being contested - Tennis, Athletics and Debating. Now over 100 years later, in 2009 the Uni Games is attracting high quality competition from Monash University’s Hockey and Basketball teams. Last year was the first time an Australian university had competed at the games. The Monash Men’s Basketball team narrowly lost the gold medal match by one point in a thriller, and is keen to make amends this time around. Mens and Womens Badminton won Gold, and Netball also won Gold, not losing a game the whole tournament. This time around, for both Mens and Womens Hockey teams and the Womens Basketball team it will be their first trip to New Zealand, and they are all expecting nothing less than to be contesting the Gold medal on the last day of the tournament. Updates will be broadcast from the scoreboard on the Monash Sport homepage.
