Singapore Marathon 2007 - Connecting Monash around the worldOn Sunday 2 December 2007, TeamMONASH™ participated for its third time in the annual Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon which attracted over 40,000 runners. 300 people represented Monash University at the event bringing together Monash students, alumni, staff, friends and family from all over the world. All participants and volunteers were invited to a pre-marathon function, where they had the opportunity to meet their fellow team members and collect their race packs. Charles Lee, President of the Monash University Alumni Association of Singapore said that “the Singapore Marathon is a great way of bringing together graduates and reconnecting them with their university”. Braving the humidity and heat, early risers made their way to the TeamMONASH™ marquee from 5am. As with all TeamMONASH™ events, participants were provided with food, drink, massage, and a social atmosphere at the marquee so that they could relax before and after their race. Cheryl Teh, President of the Malaysia Alumni Group and also participant of the event, said that this was a “wonderful opportunity for staff, students, and alumni to come together” and looks forward to seeing everyone in Malaysia in 2008 for the Malay Mail Big Walk. Participants and volunteers stood out in the crowd with their vibrant TeamMONASH™ uniforms. A large number of volunteers supported and motivated participants throughout the race with enthusiastic cheering, bang sticks and screams of “GO MONASH!” Over 40 staff, students and alumni came from Malaysia as supporters and to help on the day. They joined forces with the Singaporean volunteers to make the event a success. During September, Monash Sport ran a competition where new members could win a trip for two to Singapore to participate in the event. The two lucky winners, who happened to be international students from the UK, Louise Hilder and Heather Ricketts, said that it was an “inspirational moment crossing the finish line and that the trip would be a life long memory”. Martin Doulton, Director of Monash Sport believes that “this has been one of the most successful international events because of the diversity of people from 10 different countries representing TeamMONASH™, and shows exactly how Monash is engaging the world”. .
