Sport at Gippsland

Thursday 12 March

Last night saw a special sporting event take place, between Monash University representatives and the Churchill Cougars, the local sporting club. One football and two netball games were played.

The matches were organised to promote sport at Gippsland campus, and for the local community. It was also an opportunity for the Monash University teams to bond and make some early selections for the Southern, and Australian University Games to be held later in the year.

The Monash University football team consisted of students from Victorian campuses, although predominantly from the Gippsland campus. Most of these students had played in the successful Australian University Games team from last year.

Of the two netball games played the first one, featuring third and fourth year students from the Gippsland campus proved most successful, according to one the girls “40 something to 25”.

The second netball game, made up of predominantly first and second year students, allowed them the chance to show their skill on the court and meet new friends at the campus. For the record Monash lost to Churchill, 28 to 40.

All games were played in a friendly spirit with a lack of emphasis on the score line, so much so that both football teams claimed victory. The sporting competition was testament to the friendly spirited community at Gippsland.
