Sporting Success Celebrated

The 43rd Monash University sport blues awards were presented on Friday 24th November to well deserving student athletes. Professor Rob Willis congratulated the athletes as he presented them with their certificates.

Rob Willis also accepted the John Campbell AUS-South Champions Trophy on behalf of Monash University, for the outstanding success throughout 2006 in Southern University Games and Championships against Universities from Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania.

The Monash Sport awards were also announced on the night. David Pawley (from CHEQ) was honoured to receive the John White Volunteer of the Year Award. On behalf of John’s family, Kathy White presented David with the award for his contribution to sport as the project team leader for the Monash around the bay in a day cycling team.

Nelson Dzadey received the sport manager of the year award for men’s basketball at University Games this year. The men’s ten pin bowlers won team of the year and the netball club were awarded the club of the year trophy.

Sprinter Lauren Hewitt was inducted into the Monash Sport Hall of Fame in recognition of her amazing success in athletics. Lauren was thrilled to be inducted and excited that this is the first time she has been recognised in a Hall of Fame.

Monash Commonwealth Games athletes, Travis Brooks (hockey), Rosie Hooper (javelin thrower) and David Zalcberg (table tennis player) joined Lauren in a panel interview that entertained and inspired the 140 guests at the dinner.

The quality of the awardees was indicative of the great results achieved throughout 2007 in sport, particularly at the Southern and Australian University Games.
