Swim Squad

To provide junior swimmers with an introduction to competition squads and to produce swimmers capable of swimming competitively in all four strokes, the Monash University Pool has a well-established junior squad program. This class is great for enjoyment and fitness and is the next step for students who have successfully completed the Learn to Swim program.

Note: Squad swimmers need to be at the pool 15 minutes early (i.e 5.00am for a 5.15am start)


Squad Structure


Stroke Development Squad

Swimmers are encouraged to participate in multiple sessions per week to help build their confidence, fitness and endurance.

Sessions: 1-3 sessions per week are available at this level.

Important information:

The main aims of this squad are fine-tuning swimmer’s technique and providing an introduction to structured training sessions.

Swimmers are encouraged to become members of a swimming club to give them the opportunity to use the skills they are developing in training.

Moving to Junior Development or District Squad is based on passing the level criteria, ability, commitment and the coach’s discretion.

Swimmers require a pair of flippers and a drink bottle for every session. These can be purchased at pool reception.

Swimmers will be encouraged to attend swimming competitions suitable to their level.


Junior Development Squad

The main aim for this group is achieving regular training as well as an introduction to more serious competition.

Average age: 8-12 years old.

Sessions: 6 sessions are available at this level. Swimmers need to attend 3 or more sessions per week.

Important information:

Swimmers need to be members of a swimming club in order to compete.

Moving to State or District squad is dependant upon the swimmers ability, commitment, training capacity and coach’s discretion.

Swimmers require a wet bag. In this they need flippers, pull buoy and a drink bottle for every session. These can be purchased at pool reception.

Swimmers will be encouraged to attend swimming competitions suitable to their level.


State Squad

The main aim of this squad is participation at State Championships. Competing at a State/State Final level with an ambition to achieve National Age Qualifying times, as set by Swimming Australia.

Swimmers are required to attend 5-8 sessions per week. (This does not include dry-land.)

Swimmers are also required to attend 1 dry-land session.

Moving to the National Squad is dependant upon National Qualifying times, commitment, training ability and coach’s discretion.

Swimmers will be advised which swimming competitions are best to attend.


National Squad

The main aim of this squad is Age Nationals. Competing at an Age National level with an ambition to achieve National Age Finals and Open National Qualifying times.

District Development Squad

The main aim of this squad is to provide an environment of structured training for swimmers in levels 8 to 11.

It is suitable for swimmers who wish to train for competitive swimming, but can not commit to 3 or more sessions a week, or for swimmers training for fitness.

Swimmers are encouraged to become members of a Swimming Club to supplement their swimming training.

Moving to the State Squad is dependant upon State Qualifying times: as set by Swimming Victoria, training ability, commitment and coach’s discretion.

Swimmers require flippers and a drink bottle for every session. These can be purchased at pool reception.


Tri-swim Squad

As well as providing for competitive swimmers Monash Sport also caters for those who enjoy their swimming and wish to do some training.

It is designed for Masters, Tri-Athletes and those who can swimat a reasonable level.

This squad is run out of both pools. The pool selection is dependant upon squad numbers and available lane space.

Monash University Swimming Clubs

Since its establishment at the commencement of the 2002 Swimming Season, the Monash University Swimming Club has been developing itself into a serious swimming club. Dean Bryant is the current coach of the Monash University Swimming Club swimmers. The main focus of the swimmers is obtaining State and National Level results.

With increasing members, direction and results, Monash University Swimming Club is looking to establish itself among Victoria’s Top 5 Swimming Clubs.
